New Music for Clarinet and Piano by Japanese Composers [1997]

The Tanosaki-Richards Duo

The Tanosaki-Richards Duo introduces new works of Japanese composers for clarinet and piano, including the first recording of Joji Yuasa's Cosmos Haptic II and the first American recording of Clarinet Solitude. Yuasa skillfully integrates concepts of musical time, space, and color influenced by traditional Japanese aesthetics, and introduces new clarinet resources. Takemitsu creates various perspectives of piano (soft) and distance (space), while Matsushita refers to the delicate color transformations of the shakuhachi. Honma's music displays nuances taken from Tsugaru dialect and folk music, while Matsuo explores new color possibilities (microtones) of the clarinet and non-chordal piano writing. Fujieda's work consists of five variations of a plainchant melody in a postmodern tonal context.

"The Duo's tone is rich and resonant and serves the music perfectly...They make a solid team and their sounds blend very well together...This excellent recording of Japanese contemporary music is an important addition to the clarinetist in search of new music..I give an A for interpretation and recording theme, as well as the discovery of composer Mamoru Fujieda." (Journal of the International Clarinet Society - Dec. 1997)
