The very angry caterpillar web quest

Created By: Krista Silva, Ed 202/001

 Intro Task Process Resources Rubric

Hello, and welcome to “the very angry caterpillar web quest.” Today your teacher will read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A story by: Eric Carle.

You are looking at the story from a caterpillar’s perspective and Mr. Carle’s View on caterpillars makes you very angry. You decide to get with some fuzzy caterpillar friends and write Mr. Carle a letter describing exactly what kind of caterpillar you are and the kinds of things you like to eat. This way Mr. Carle will know that not all caterpillars are little pigs like the caterpillar in Mr. Carle's story.

Task

So………

v   Which kind of Caterpillar will you be?

v   What kinds of things do you eat?

v   Where do you live?

v     Draw a picture of what you will look like as a butterfly. (To find the answers to these questions, use the links next to your caterpillar or books from your classroom!)

The Process

1) Your teacher will assign you into groups of four.

2) In these groups you will each pick a caterpillar to research.

3) Then each of you will research that certain caterpillar and find the information for the questions above.

4) After finding all the information to go with your caterpillar, you will then get back into a group only this time with people who chose the same caterpillar as you.

5) You will each read your letter to Mr. Carle to the class and answer questions.

Sample Letter (Please do not use this letter as your own!)

Dear Mr. Carle, I am a Monarch Caterpillar and I have some concerns about your book "The Very hungry Caterpillar." The things you have the caterpillar eat in the story are nothing like what I eat. For instance, I like to eat: Milk weed and Dogbane plant leaves. I live all over the world and like to stay wherever milkweed is plentiful. Some day I will be a beautiful butterfly but until then, please get your facts correct.

- Thank You Mrs. Monarch

(Please make your picture larger!)

Congratulations! Your letters will now be sent to Mr. Carle and he will read and hopefully understand all of the different caterpillars concerns. If you did the assignment correctly, perhaps Mr. Carle will see the wrong in his ways and revise his story!

*Caterpillar

Research

I did not even look for

a caterpillar.

I looked for a caterpillar

But did not do the assigned work.

I looked for a caterpillar but only wrote down some of the information

I looked up my caterpillar and did the assignment correctly, only missing one or two bits of information.

I Did the assignment all the way through, did the best that I could and did all the research necessary, I answered the questions from the class and showed that I knew the information.

* Letter

I did not write a letter, or only wrote one or two words

I wrote a letter but had many grammatical errors and left out crucial things that had to do

with the assignment.

I wrote the letter, but had many grammatical errors and not much research included.

I wrote the letter and corrected most of the grammatical errors and showed my knowledge of my caterpillar.

I had no grammatical errors and showed that I knew everything there was to know about my caterpillar type.

* Picture

I don’t care about a picture

I drew a picture but of what I wanted to not of my caterpillar

I drew a picture but not of my butterfly type or I copied the person next to me.

I drew my caterpillar but did not color it the correct colors.

I drew a picture of the caterpillar I chose and used all the correct colors.
