Savannah River projectile points are often big. They also seem to have developed from earlier points like the Stanly stemmed and Kirk stemmed (6). |

Trade increased and more and more exotic things were showing up in the North Carolina Piedmont. The arrival of exotic stuff seemed, according to archaeologists, to result in societies that developed a class system as evidenced by more elaborate mortuary practices for certain "special" people. Nevertheless, the North Carolina Piedmont does not seem to show as much evidence for this as other areas in the east (at least not in the late Archaic). The "Mast Forest" tradition extended from 2700 to 1200 BC. This tradition was mostly centered in the Northeast but did extend as far south as North Carolina. The Mast Forest sites contained pestles and grinders for processing nuts. In New York, some archaeologists think they have found evidence of warfare and possibly cannibalism (1). Now I could believe this for present day New Yorkers... (Sorry, just kiddin' but I couldn't pass this one up.) ![]() Smooth Hammer Stone could have been used for processing nuts |
