I had to save this one with the story that goes with it....
![]() "It looks funny... the tip is messed up... it's not valuable"
That's how some would see this point... why? because they have the brains of a housefly! (and because they didn't find it!) Well, it's obviously a Kirk corner notched style thingy... So what's the deal with the funny tip? Well, it looks like it broke by impact. It has an impact style flake running from the tip about 1/5 the way down the blade. However, this flake could have resulted from thinning and re-sharpening. Anyway, this blade was probably used as a halfted knife and the funny shaped tip is from re-sharpening and use. (The tip is actually quite worn from use.) But, this is how it may have happened.... The light from the morning sun appeared to be rising from the steamy ground as the hunters followed the trail of a large bear that had passed their camp during the night. This summer had brought few deer and the usual harvest of berries had been thin due to a draught that had run from spring to mid-summer. But, the prospect of bagging a bear brought hope and excitement to the weary hunters, not only for the meat and other cool stuff that you could get from bears, but also for the deep meaning that killing a bear held for the band. The hunters came upon the bear as it crossed over a small ridge. The guy who made the point I found circled around to the North while the others circled south. The savvy old bear knew the hunters from the north were coming so he headed quietly south. However, he did not realize that the guy who had knapped my (well, ok it was his at the time) point had positioned himself in a deep draw and waited. But the bear did something unexpected. Instead of traveling along the draw he came down into the draw catching the hunter by surprise. The mighty hunter reared back and flung his spear with his trusty atlatl. (Doh! He forgot to aim... been there.) The spear hit the bear in the right shoulder and smashed into his shoulder bone damaging the tip. Fortunately, the damage was a typical impact flake which left the spear tip lopsided but still very sharp. The bear lunged in anger as our hunter lifted his spear. The hunter was knocked on his tucas as he watched the butt of the spear jam deep into the bank of the draw just before it splintered into a shower of toothpicks. Just then he felt a warm liquid running down his leg. "Yikes! Blood!" But then he saw the bear, propped up like it has been mounted and set in a sporting goods store. It leaned on what was left of his spear. The crimson covered stone point was sticking out the back of the great beast. Then he noticed the damage to the spear tip, broken and subsequently worn from use. "Shoot!" he thought. "It took a long time to make that point." Well, anyway, did I mention that it was probably really used as a halfted knife? |
