Lanceolate, fluted projectile points (above) are the earliest type known in the North Carolina Piedmont. Hardaway points and Dalton points are usually dated to the very late Pleistocene or Paleoindian (5).
Early Paleoindian hunters may have come to the Piedmont in search of Pleistocene megafauna (whatever that is) (1, 5).

Anyway, these folks started showing up as the spruce-pine (boreal) forests were heading north and oaks, hickories and other northern hardwoods were moving in (5:chpt 1). They made a living as collectors (5, p. 6). No, I'm not talking about those people you see on the "Antiques Road Show"... Just go read the Early Archaic page, where you'll find a nice explanation. These folks appear to have relied more heavily on hunting for noshing than those who came after them. They also seemed to move around a lot more, too (1, 5).
