Lanceolate, fluted projectile points (above) are the earliest type known in the North Carolina Piedmont. Hardaway points and Dalton points are usually dated to the very late Pleistocene or Paleoindian (5). |

Anyway, these folks started showing up as the spruce-pine (boreal) forests were heading north and oaks, hickories and other northern hardwoods were moving in (5:chpt 1). They made a living as collectors (5, p. 6). No, I'm not talking about those people you see on the "Antiques Road Show"... Just go read the Early Archaic page, where you'll find a nice explanation. These folks appear to have relied more heavily on hunting for noshing than those who came after them. They also seemed to move around a lot more, too (1, 5). |
