Tools are frustrating entities to define. When it comes to humans, almost everything we have is a tool by some definition. Books are tools, shoes are tools, driveways are tools, even nose hair could be considered a tool (for some of you more so than others)... Describing the uses of tools is equally as frustrating.
Books, for instance, have been used to store information, to dry and preserve flowers, to prop-up unbalanced tables, and to elevate youngsters. They have even been used as a fuel source by some, but I won't go there... So you find a rock. It's been altered by humans. Problem: how do we describe it, and how do we determine its use by those who made it? Back to the book: An extra-terrestrial archaeologist finds a book. The book contains words, so it must be used to store information... but, it also has a squished, dried flower between the pages... in addition it was found in archaeological context propping-up a table leg, and, to make matters worse, a picture is found nearby with a child sitting on a stack of books in order to reach the table... Now if extra-terrestrial archaeologists are just as opinionated as terrestrial archaeologists, you can just imagine the ensuing altercations... ... |
