Flake

Flakes and blades are flat pieces of rock struck from cores. These little hunks of rock are often made into to tools or used as is (4, 5). Retouched Blade

Various debitage or waste flakes

Some of these little thingys are simply just waste flakes from tool manufacturing (7). Sometimes they are recycled... Some of these thingys are used and then resharpened with no real attempt to shape the sharp little doohickey. These are called expedient lithic tools or flakes. "Utilized" Flake

Blade

What's the difference between a flake and a blade??? Apparently archaeologists like to debate that question (7). A simple "TUSMOLAC" definition: Blades have a little ridge all the way down their back, and flakes don't. (Actually, I have no idea whether that is true or not.) Flake

Sometimes flakes are slightly modified to make a tool for a particular function. These thingys are called modified flakes (wow)(3,4,5). Denticulate
