Elda Tate
Music of Japan Today III: Tradition and Innovation
Elda Tate
is a Professor of Music at Northern Michigan University. She
earned the DMA in flute performance at the University of Texas at Austin
and was a student of John Hicks and Shirley Justus in Texas, and Lois
Schaefer and Harold Bennett in New York. An active soloist and chamber musician, her performance background has included opera, symphonic, and
wind orchestras in Texas, Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan. She has
served as flutist with three different Trios, including a Michigan Arts
Ensemble which premiered and recorded several commissioned compositions. A
special emphasis has been performances of contemporary and traditional
musics, particularly Japanese music and Native American flute music.
