Birth parents unknown. Raised in orphanage. Started working in quarries in St. Louis when 13 years old. Later owned a livery stable in St. Louis at Jefferson and Arsenal Streets. reportedly opened one of the first funeral homes in St. Louis as part of his livery business. Listed in "St. Louis City Directory, 1890" as occupation, "livery", at 2929 S. Jefferson Avenue.43

Not listed as a child of John Hahn in his 1877 probate settlement. This perhaps supports the family lore that he was adopted, and not an heir of John Hahn, or it could be he was simply disowned.

Lived at 112(?) Anne Ave. in St. Louis, with wife Maggie and daughter Lillie, along with three other families - Jacob Ford, George Elluig, and Theodore Foster. Interesting, because Anne Ave. is the cross street on S. Broadway, named Carandolet in 1880, where GGrandfather Neu's saloon was at 2206 S. Broadway. Occupation listed as "Porter in Store". Maggies listed as "keeping house".

Daughter Lillie, age 50, and son, Charles, age 48, lived with Edward and Margaret. Being 75 at the time of the census, he was born in 1855. While born in Missouri, both parents were born in Germany. Occupation listed as retired. Not a veteran.
