Selected Experience

Jan - Jul & Oct - Dec 2005: Reference Librarian/Archivist (Temporary Part Time), Southern Polytechnic State Univ. Library. Marietta, GA. Determined requirements for Archives and filled them with minimal resources, including accession, arrange, conserve/preserve, make finding aids, make available, etc. In charge of the building on Sundays. I staffed the Reference Desk, providing general professional library services, and sometimes staffed the Circulation desk as needed. Wrote all or part of two grant applications.  I also carried out various projects to increase the instructional and other value of the library.  I was recalled, to staff the Reference Desk and keep the library open, Sundays only, for Oct. - Dec.

Jan - Mar 2004: Intern at Atlanta-Fulton Public Library. Rotated through all departments at "Central" with most of my work time spent on the desk in the Ivan Allen Reference Department. Carried out assignments at Buckhead and Ponce de Leon Branches including various "staff the desk" periods and a live book order.

Jun 95 - present: Independent Investor; also book dealer (included, for two years, being half owner of The Science Fiction & Mystery Book Shop, Ltd.). Alexandria, VA, Chattanooga, TN, & Atlanta, GA. Handled various financial transactions as well as all phases of store operation such as acquisition and shelving of books. Served book store customers in a tactful and courteous manner. Created displays/exhibits. Arranged special events such as author signings.

During portions of this period (May 1999 to November 2001) I was also the founder and CEO of South East Convention Fandom, Inc. -- a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Besides accomplishing the incorporation and IRS recognition, I recruited and placed volunteer workers, coordinated the creation and production of flyers, the web site, publicity, and fund raising events. Handled relations with other organizations. I have accomplished similar projects (science fiction conventions, amateur magazines, clubs, etc.) over a 40 year period, on a lesser scale. I was also Secretary of the Atlanta Chapter of Sisters in Crime (Mystery/Thriller Fiction organization) and the Georgia Sherlock Holmes Club.

Nov 87 -  Jun 95: Administration & Resource Management Division of the Defense Technical Information Center (DoD), Fort Belvoir, VA. Management Analyst & similar positions at the US Department of Defense’s central special library for research, development, and similar information.

Among many other tasks, I assisted at the annual users (patrons) conference, showed my own staff how to use computers to do their work, and served on, or chaired, several committees which involved coordination of difficult and complex issues requiring strong organizational, analytical and communication skills. Prepared briefings and presentations for senior managers and other personnel. Prepared narrative and statistical reports of library (information center) activities, events, and usage. Set up and maintained databases, screened and routed incoming and outgoing workflow/material, received and handled telephone calls, prepared schedules and work instructions. Assisted and trained personnel in the preparation of the majority of the statistical information used by the management of the agency and higher authorities. Worked with minimal supervision.

Sep 86 - Dec 86: World Science Fiction Convention, Atlanta, GA. Assistant to Director of Finance & Administration. Processed monetary transactions. Matched invoices and other documents to checks or similar. Researched and resolved problems. Input all the above to a database. Speed, accuracy, attention to details, and working as a team member were all factors here. Checked my own work.

Apr 86 - Sep 86: Romance & Cookbook Bookstore, Atlanta, GA. Owner. Created the store, coordinated the rebuilding of the site and emplacement of fixtures, ordered and shelved books, and performed all tasks of operating a book store such as serving book store customers in a tactful and courteous manner.

Prior/other positions were generally as an Industrial Engineer except two positions as an IRS tax examining clerk. During one nine month period I was a Graduate Assistant in the Univ.TN Knoxville Industrial Engr. Dept.during which time I was the instructor for a few class sessions along with fairly typical "assist the instructor" duties and, not typical, was sent out as a consultant, under contract, to government and non-profit agencies.

Sep 66 - Sep 69: US Army. USA, Germany, and Viet Nam.
