 GEOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARIES and GAZETTEERS

A gazetteer is usually a list of geographical names, physical features, etc.  Some also give information on location.  Some tell about the listed item.  Geographical Dictionaries do the later but tend to give pronunciation and other dictionary information as well.

I am not sure that any of those available would be useful.  In any case, for most geographic sources, you will want to look for "world" or "international," unless you have a small area in mind, and, even then, the larger categories tend to have the information you need even if smaller ones exist.  You can take a look at McDonnell, R. & Kemp, K. (1995).  International GIS Dictionary.  NY:  John Wiley & Sons.  [Call Number REF G70.212.M33 1995]  You may do better online.

MAPS and ATLASES

Try the World Book Encyclopedia, the map on the wall in Government Documents, the globes mentioned in Key to Locations for MAP, or some other library. The note, above, about geographical information for smaller areas often being found in those for larger areas, applies here as well. There should be a new, good, world atlas, in the Reference "pit" area in the near future.

Also note that in many cases the specific reference sources listed will include maps on that limited subject.  Failing that, you can look online or in GOV.  It appears there is a special map storage in the library.  It is in GOV since most of the maps are GOV maps.  You can set the format of PALS to "Map" and search, or you can ask the GOV personnel; there is a small chance you may find something useful.
