OTHER LIBRARIES

Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System (2003).  Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System.  Retrieved April 7, 2003, from http://www.af.public.lib.ga.us.  The central and Auburn Street branches are reputed suitable for research work.  Ask the staff for anything you cannot determine from their web site.  Note from their site that Hispanic services are available.

DeKalb County Public Library (2003).  DeKalb County Public Library System.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.dekalblibrary.org. The central, Decatur, branch, and, to a limited extent, the four "area" branches are set up for research.  Chamblee is the center for Hispanic material.  At least those five branches have good atlas collections.  Free parking.  One member of the AUCTR Reference staff also works at Decatur; you can ask.

Emory University Libraries (2003).  Emory University Libraries.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.emory.edu/LIBRARIES/.  Their central library is also named the Robert W. Woodruff library.  I have used it a great deal; it is specifically set up for your research needs except you cannot directly check out material.  Free parking most of the time.

Georgia State University Library (2003).  Georgia State University Libraries.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.gsu.edu/gsuhome-v1/libraries/index.html.  This system is set up for research similar to Emory.  There are usually some staff working at AUCTR library (typically the African American Collection) who also work there; you can ask.

 (FREE) TRANSLATION SYSTEMS

AltaVista Company (2003). AltaVista’s BabelFish. Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://babelfish.altavista.com/ Oldest system?   Improved in last few months.

SDL International. (2003). FreeTranslation.  Retrieved April 7, 2003, from http://www.freetranslation.com This is recommended due to ease of use. It is also useful for obtaining accent marked letters.

WorldLingo, Inc. (2003). WorldLingo. Retrieved April 7, 2003, from http://www.worldlingo.com/ This is especially useful as a check on FreeTranslation in conjunction with a standard paper dictionary.

ONLINE DICTIONARIES, ETC.

Diccionarios.com (2003). Tus Dictionarios Online. Retrieved March 27, 2003, from http://www.diccionarios.com This is SOL-PLUS’s recommended dictionary.

Yourdictionary.com, Inc. (2003 a). Romance Languages. Retrieved March 20, 2003, from http://www.yourdictionary.com/languages/romance.html#spanish

Yourdictionary.com, Inc. (2003 b). Language Dictionaries. Retrieved March 20, 2003, from http://www.yourdictionary.com/languages.html This offered links to online dictionaries in about 230 different languages; as of April 17, 2003, there were closer to 260 and climbing.

Yourdictionary.com, Inc. (2003 c). Multiple Dictionary Search Engines. Retrieved March 20, 2003, from http://www.yourdictionary.com/diction1.html#translate This contains a set of links to translators but is not one itself.

SEARCH (TERM) STRATEGY & ENGINE

I am currently only recommending one search engine.  Yahoo and most others are using it, at this time.  Google (2003).  Google.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.google.com .

When looking for things Hispanic, besides the obvious terms, try hypenating or un-hypenating the your terms and adding/using:  Latin, Lantino, Latina, Chican (Chicano/a is usually for Mexican-American), Multi-cultural (to get your Hispanic as a part of a book on a subject), World or International or European or Ethnic (ditto), South America(n), Central America(n), Caribbean (in some cases), Catholic (in some cases, because so much of the Hispanic world is heavily Catholic), Iberio or Iberian (will get you Portugal/Portuguese thrown in), and Romance (Spanish as well as French and several other languages).  Sometimes Mexico and Central America, together are called Meso-America.  On many search engines, putting "your phrase in quotes like this" will get you that exact term only.  Adding +thisword, like that will assure it is in the results, again, on some engines.  A minus will often do the reverse and you will want to -Brazil and -Haiti, if possible.

DATABASES, WEB-SITES AND THE LIKE

The following databases are the most common for doing research on things Hispanic.  What they are and what they contain are labeled in them.  You will need your institution's password, for the following, unless otherwise noted, to first get into GALILEO (2003).  GALILEO.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.galileo.usg.edu unless you log on from inside your institution or the AUCTR library.  (Providing links from here will not work or not work well):

Academia and Libraries (WWW links) -- no password required.

America:  History and Life.

Area Studies and Ethnic Studies (WWW links) -- no password required.

Biography Index (note there is a different database for the same purpose, BioRC) available, retrieved July 24, 2003, from the http://www.auctr.edu Atlanta University Center Library Catalog and Resources if they gave you that password or you log on from inside the library; it is quite good.

EBSCOhost Databases -- this covers many databases also listed separately.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online -- often your first attempt and contains several other databases within it.

General and Reference Sources (WWW links) -- no password needed.

The Grove Dictionary of Art.

OCLC and/or WorldCat, which take you to FirstSearch, which in turn has many databases, otherwise separately listed, within it.

You can get at Ethnic News Watch from inside AUCTR, choose databases from their home page.

You may also want to check out LANIC (2003).  LANIC.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://lanic.utexas.edu/ as it is, after all, the Latin American Information Network.

For lighter reading, try Hispanic MAGAZINE.com (2003).  Hispanic Magazine.com.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.hispaniconline.com/magazine.

For government documents, especially the CIA Factbook, there is no point in my duplicating the Government Documents Department (2003).  Government Documents.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.auctr.edu/gov.htm.

For maps, Encarta.com (2003).  Encarta Dynamic Atlas.  Retrieved July 24, 2003, from http://www.encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/mapcenter/map.aspx.
