How to create or change problem definitions

TIAS lets you define network events or patterns of network events as problems.

You may chose to have certain problems appear on your Problem Overview by subscribing to a view that includes these problems.

Once a TIAS client subscribes to a view, the TIAS server sends instances of the selected problems to that client.

The problems you define in TIAS determine which events the TIAS server identifies as problems. Once you define a problem, any TIAS client can define a view which includes it.

How to create or change a problem definition

From the Definitions pull-down menu, select Problems. The Problem Definitions dialog box shows a list of the currently defined problems.

Defining a new problem

To define a new problem, do the following.

The Problem Definition Editor dialog box

  1. Click on the New button. The Problem Editor dialog box appears.
  2. In the Category field, enter a unique name. This name should describe the category of problem defined.
  3. In the Name field, enter a name for the new problem you are creating. The name should be unique among problems within the category.
  4. In the Definition field, enter a problem specification.
  5. Click on the Logging button to toggle it from True to False. For the problem you are defining:

if Logging is set to: the TIAS server:
log events sends logs associated with the problem to the TIAS client
none does not send logs associated with the problem to the TIAS client
log & archive events sends logs associated with the problem to the TIAS client and stores them in the database for retrieval

If the problem you are defining is likely to involve a large number of event messages, it might be a good idea to set Logging to False. This will avoid flooding the TIAS client with log messages.

  6. Click on the Active button to toggle it from True to False. For the problem you are defining:

if Active is set to: the TIAS server:
False does not monitor events to check for the problem.
True monitors events to check for the problem.

  7. Click on the Apply button.

The problem definition is sent to the TIAS server. It is available to any other TIAS client.

To redefine a problem

To redefine an existing problem, do the following:
  1. Select Problem from the Definitions menu. The Problem Definitions dialog box appears.
  2. Select the problem you want to redefine from the list of existing problem definitions.
  3. Click on the Edit button. The Problem Definition Editor dialog box appears, populated with data for the problem you selected.
  4. Change the entries in any of the fields.
  5. Click on the Apply button.
The problem definition changes to reflect the new definition you gave it.

NOTE
If you give the problem definition a new name, and then save it, you create a new problem definition.
