Welcome to the Vance Family's Website! It was designed to introduce you to our daughter, Katie, who has Asperger's Syndrome, in the hope that our experience might benefit other children like her and their families.

We welcome your questions, comments and suggestions. You can sign our guest book, send us an e-mail, or use the Human Click icon at the bottom of this page. If we are online, the icon will say "Click Here to Chat." If not, it will instruct you to leave a message.

Unlike most sites devoted to Autism Spectrum Disorders, we have not included a section which describes the disorders themselves, since we feel that so doing would be redundant. Also, our early Internet research into Autism, Hyperlexia and Asperger's Syndrome led us to many sites, but plowing through the "What is Autism" section time after time left us screaming at the monitor "Ok we KNOW what it is already! Now what?"  Our links page will direct you to several sites which do an outstanding job of describing the nature of Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. The purpose of this site is to describe how autism affects a real family, not in Cyberspace, but here on Earth.

Like many parents of children with developmental disorders, our first reactions to the realization that something was "different" about Katie included confusion, sadness and a burning desire for someone to tell us what to do about it. Unfortunately, no one did. Read our story to find out how we coped. Here you will also find separate sections which describe Katie's education program, the M.D.s (good, bad and indifferent) who contributed to her diagnosis, and our newest section, called Our Intervention Program: A Developmental Approach. We do not use the more common behavioral approach to autism intervention, and we'll tell you why.

In response to the many letters we receive from parents looking for more information on Stanley Greenspan's Floor Time, we have recently added a section which contains a description of the method and some strategies for implementing it. You can reach our Floor Time pages from Our Intervention Program. Returning visitors to our site can reach Floor Time directly by clicking here.

COSAC urges NJ Assembly not to pass a  bill banning the use of restraints and aversives. Visit Special Ed Watchdog to read COSAC's testimony and our opinion.

Our Special Ed. Watchdog  section contains information that we feel may be useful to New Jersey parents in their roles as advocates for their children. If you are not from New Jersey, you may still find it helpful since New Jersey State Law, like all states, must be compatible with IDEA. The only thing that changes is how, and how well, the law is implemented.

The Katie Vance News is posted here monthly and contains reports from home, school and each of her individual therapists. Anyone involved in Katie's care can access the newsletter with a password. We try to keep our team members well informed so that they can learn from each other and reinforce each other's work.

Our Links page will take you to some of the sites we have found most helpful.

If you're ready to become a Floor Time family like us, visit our newest addition and companion site, Shopping on The Asperger's Express. You'll find our list of recommended reading for parents there as well as many of Katie's favorite toys, games, books, software, and educational materials. Purchases benefit The Asperger's Express.

How can we help you? If the Human Click icon says "Need Help?" you may click on it to open a chat window and chat with us directly. You may also send an e-mail using the "Contact Us" button below.
