The 1919 Provisional Issues
|
|
January 1919

The provisionals issued in January 1919 were
caused by the sudden increase in the rate from 5 ore to 7 ore for letters
less than 20 grams and was effective January 1st. Because the new
7 ore adhesives had not reached the islands, the Danish Post Office authorized
Godskesen Andersen of Thorshavn to diagonally bisect 4 ore stamps because
there were no 2 ore stamps available. The period of usage was only
for 28 days - from January 3rd to January 31st, although the majority were
used before January 13th. The quantity of basic stamps available
is believed to have been 8 sheets of 100 stamps that would have produced
1600 bisected stamps |

5 ore used in Vestmanhavn. This bisect has been reported to be used
only in Vestamanhavn. Only three copies known.

Local cover with two - 2 øre on 5 øre and a 1 øre
cancelled with Thorshavn C.D.S. dated January 18, 1919 depicting the printed
matter rate. This combination of franking is highly irregular as
the 5 øre green Christian X then in use satisfied this rate.
