It seems that this question keeps popping up: "why do I have to trim my mudflaps to run 31" tires on my 98-00 Frontier? The guy with the 01+ didn't!"
To answer the question forever, I've pieced together the best visual evidence I can round up, and I think it says it all.

I've taken photographs of two SE Desert Runners with nearly the same pose and cropped the fenders to close proximity. Left in color, it is hard to tell the difference...

...but changed to negative, the difference is clear that with the same tire and rim there is more room for a larger tire to clear without resorting to flap or fender trimming.
