MATRIARCH OF
CONSPIRACY is the tale of a family and a clan, out of the
German Prussian aristocracy, a family that played a dominant role during the
great years of imperial Germany. In the 20th century, when the the Nazis and
Adolf Hitler rose to power Ruth von Kleist and her family early on recognized
the true nature of the beast. This family saga documents the gradual involvement
of the men and women from this closely knit family in the underground movement
that evolved into the failed conspiracy to kill Hitler and bring down the Nazis.
Always Ruth von Kleist was the glue that held the family together as events led
quickly to both tragic and heroic endings.
It was this matriarch who
brought the German Christian martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer into the Kleist family
circle, cementing relationships between the civilian conspirators headquartered
in Berlin and the military leaders on Germany's eastern front. It was also Ruth
von Kleist who engineered the meetings between her granddaughter Maria von
Wedemeyer and Bonhoeffer, which led to their marriage engagement shortly before
Bonhoeffer was arrested.
