Specimens from the Elmwood Mine
(updated 12/5/08)
We've always loved the minerals from the Elmwood Mine, in Smith County, Tennessee, and have actively sought them out. The mine has been closed for a while now, and good-quality, affordable specimens are hard to come by. We've got a few flats of these highly prized minerals, including honey-colored and clear calcite, fluorite, barite, and gemmy sphalerite. Compared to other dealers' prices, our prices (ranging from $16 - $150, with most under $50) are quite reasonable. A few examples from our inventory are shown below.
__ Calcite with fluorite and smoky quartz, Elmwood Mine, Tennessee (#G08-347, $130). The smoky quartz is rare for this location.
__ Honey-colored calcite crystal, Elmwood Mine, Tennessee (#G08-348, $150). A very large, showy piece.
__ Fluorite on dolomite, Elmwood Mine, Tennessee (#G08-333, $70).
__ Sphalerite and barite on dolomite, Elmwood Mine, Tennessee (SOLD). This smaller (about 1.5 inches across) specimen is very affordable, and we have several others in this price range.
__ Barite, Elmwood Mine, Tennessee (#G08-308, $115). We've nicknamed this one "The Brain". It weighs over 13 pounds and is about 8 inches across and about 3 inches tall! It's got a very gemmy calcite crystal at the bottom of the photograph, as well as some sphalerite. We have similar, but smaller, specimens of these rounded barite specimens.
