FOSSIL CLAMS WITH CALCITE
(updated 9/08)
We've got a great selection of these clams (Mercenaria permagna) from central Florida, and they are getting harder to collect. These specimens are about 1 million years old (Plio-Pleistocene age). We have many of the whole or nearly whole clams, most having deep-orange calcite crystals showing around the hinge line. We've got several that are in coquina matrix, and several specimens that are calcite crystals on shell fragments. The calcite fluoresces greenish-white and has a slight phosphorescence. Prices range from $16-$72, and are very reasonable when compared to prices for similar specimens that you find on the Net. We can also put together a flat of these at wholesale prices - send us an e-mail.
__A beautiful specimen, with both large & small calcite crystals (#G05-391, $66).
__An example of a whole clam with calcite crystals. Whole clams with calcite are getting harder to find. (#G05-369, $20)

__Two views of this specimen (#G05-381, $40). Note the smaller clam that's attached to the big one in the second photo.
