What's With the Goldfish?

Percy, Roosevelt and Foster ... are The Thompson Group goldfish. They live in our reception area, where their antics entertain those who spend a few moments there. Oh yes, they love classical music and jazz. Most of their visitors do, too.

These beautiful creatures never tire in their work, and the message they deliver goes far beyond the obvious "Welcome" they convey. You might find their story useful as you go about your own business ... tackling the many things that always need to get done.

You see, Percy, Roosevelt, and Foster don't ask much in the way of pay - a few flakes of their favorite food will do. But they do need attention. Their water must be carefully tended, and their bowl kept meticulously clean. It takes daily attention! Without this, they'll die!

Their message is simple. "Some things are much more important than others."

These little goldfish remind us, it's like that in business. There are so many details - so many demands. Where's that form? What's this report say? What's that price? Who is that calling? When's the next meeting. My office's a mess! The software won't work! Our staff has a grumbler. Our collections are slow. This list doesn't end!

We brought Percy, Roosevelt and Foster into our world because of the obvious, yet they have taught us more ... that some things are far more important than others. These are the things our company must do ... or else we will die!

To tell the truth, Percy, Roosevelt and Foster can go a day or two by themselves - without their food, without their clean water, without our attention.

They'll make it - but the toll will be paid. They'll be lethargic ... in murky water ... and begin to fear for their lives.

You may also appreciate a little known fact that goldfish have a very short three-second memory. They live in the present, and they keep no to-do lists. Everything for them is "Now!"

Note the similarity of goldfish to marketing? It's the message these beautiful little goldfish convey. For if you let your marketing go unattended, your company's plight will be the same as what might happen to Percy, Roosevelt and Foster. Your water will cloud, your life will become lethargic, you'll fear for survival.

New business, from new sources and current customers ... is the clean water, sustenance  and oxygen your company need to grow and live happily. You must attend to this NOW - every day. Anything you do that defers your marketing is clouding your water and putting your survival in peril. Sure, you can neglect this for a few days - but you'll surely pay the toll.

"Some things are much more important than others!"
