Five Resolutions to Help Us Excel!

04/10/03 - I saw this list not long ago in a publication for meeting professionals.

It has - in my opinion - direct implications for us all. That's why I'm making it the keystone of this month's Update.

Five simple statements - to help us focus on becoming better at the things we do and the lives we lead:

  1. Create a winning routine. Develop a fine-tuned work routine that will help you through your "typical" day. The routine may vary, but at least you will have one. Bunch together your most difficult work, and make sure you are doing it during your peak performance time.

  2. Clarify your professional vision. Write down, with as many specifics as possible, what professional success looks like to you. What will you be doing, and what will you be wearing while you do it? Will there be people around you, and who would they be? Use the specific vision to create a more viable path to your goals.

  3. Transcend your old prejudices. Old, confining prejudices keep you from choosing something better. Don't use old systems just because they work. New systems also work - usually faster and more effectively. For example, if you're not using new technology, why not? Talk to others who are successfully using new approaches and find out what you're missing.

  4. Do complete work. Instead of stopping and starting many different projects, pick one thing and complete it effectively. Is there really a reason you can't put your phone calls and e-mail on hold for a while...or are you just addicted to activity?

  5. Focus on the present. You've made mistakes in the past that you regret. Welcome to the human race. Learn from your mistakes, but don't stay focused on them. Shift as much of your energy as possible to what you can achieve today and tomorrow.

That's it. Five things - but not all that easy. Good luck with them all in your personal quest to get better each day.
