STEP 4:

TELEPHONE SCREENING

It's normal to feel stress when calling and making contact. You may feel dependent and vulnerable. Some of these feelings will disappear as you get more control over the situation.

What Does Screening Consist of?

This is the time for you to get some background information before scheduling an appointment. First, ask the therapist if she is accepting new clients. Then, briefly tell the therapist what's troubling you. Ask about the therapist's credentials, training and orientation, the type of service he provides (individual, group, couples, etc.), and special area of expertise. Then cover the practical questions, fee, insurance, etc. Assess the kind of welcome you received on the telephone and the therapist's willingness to respond to your  questions.

Don't Stop Screening

Therapists have mixed feelings about being asked questions over the phone. Some aren't comfortable, others don't want to do something for which they are not getting paid. Don't let a bad experience or anxiety keep you from screening. Not all therapists are opposed to being screened over the telephone. My advice, stick to them.

How Many Should I Interview?

Screen and interview as many therapists for which you have time and can afford.
